Natural Language Processing
The aim of natural language processing (NLP) is to establish communication between humans and computers. In comparison to known methods, such as the use of a programming language or a nomenclature, in this approach the computer has to adapt to the human being. This makes it possible for the computer to process information from large quantities of unstructured text or audio.
Language is a very complex, ambiguous and individual construct that does not always follow formalized rules. This is why machine learning approaches are increasingly often used in NLP. In the past, symbolic and rule-based systems were mostly used. For example, synonym lists and semantic word databases were maintained with great effort. Today, the system learns independently the semantic connection of words from unstructured free text. However, one of the difficulties is that there are hardly any text-based databases in German. Therefore, one of eonum’s current projects is the creation of a database of medical free text.
